Welcome Items ♥ A Complete Guide to Creating and Designing Fake Cakes
2018.10.22 published
I want to know about welcome items that everyone hasn't prepared yet!
To all the brides-to-be, have you gathered all the items to decorate your welcome space?
Items to display in the welcome space include
☑ Welcome board
☑ Photo frames
☑ Candles
and various other types.
Of course, there are the standard items, but there must be some of you who want to decorate with something new and fresh that the guests have never seen before*
"Welcome Cake" is new and recommended!
For those who feel that way, I recommend decorating with a "fake cake" as a welcome item.
A fake cake is an artificial object mimicking a wedding cake. It is also known as a "dummy cake."
(By the way, "imitation cake" refers to non-edible cakes that the couple cuts during the reception.)
The fake cake can look just like a real wedding cake from a distance, making it an item that surprises and captures the attention of guests.
Some brides even place it on their dessert buffet table, not just in the welcome space!♡
While fake cakes are a standard welcome item overseas, the number of brides preparing them in Japan is still quite small.
In this article, I will introduce how to make fake cakes, the materials needed, and design examples!
Basic materials for a fake cake*
Here are the materials needed for a fake cake.
☑ Round box or Styrofoam
☑ Wall sealant
☑ Vinyl sheet or plastic wrap
☑ Cooking sheet
☑ Gloves
☑ Spatula
☑ Glue or glue gun
☑ Artificial flowers, food samples, ribbons
☑ Cake topper (optional)
Round boxes are sold at Daiso, and Styrofoam can be found at Tokyu Hands.
Wall sealant is a sealing material used for wallpaper seams or as a base treatment for wallpaper. It will be used as frosting♩ You can purchase it on Rakuten for around 500 yen.

Next, let's go over the basic steps for making a fake cake.
Basic Steps for Fake Cake Making ① Stack and Glue the Boxes
Remove the lid from the round box, flip it upside down, stack it, and glue it with a glue gun or bond. Be careful to keep the center aligned.
If you only want to make a single-tier fake cake, you can skip this step!
Basic Steps for Fake Cake Making ② Apply Wall Sealant
Once the boxes are securely glued, put on gloves and use a spatula to apply the wall sealant.
To prevent mess, lay a vinyl sheet or plastic wrap on the table. Then place the box on top of a cooking sheet (this will help it release easily after it’s done).
Squeeze a lot of sealant (wall sealant) on the top of the box and spread it evenly with the spatula. Let any excess cream flow down the sides.
Cover all layers with wall sealant using the steps above.
You can change the appearance of the cake by modifying how you apply the cream♡
Basic Steps for Fake Cake Making ③ Let it Dry
Once you've covered the entire surface with wall sealant, let it dry thoroughly.
It’s safe to let it sit for 2-3 days.
If you have parts like cake toppers that you want to insert into the cake base, make sure to add them before the wall sealant dries.
Once it’s completely dry, it becomes hard and difficult to insert items.
Basic Steps for Fake Cake Making ④ Decoration
Once the wall sealant is completely dry, decorate freely with fruits, flowers, and ribbons to complete your fake cake!
Writing illustrations or letters on the sides can also add a stylish touch♩
