Car Surprise is an idea for celebrating a birthday by decorating the trunk area of a car with items like balloons and garlands to create a surprise! ♡

① Invite the person by saying something like, "Let's go for a drive today!"

② Prepare the decorations in advance,

③ When you meet up, prompt them with "Check out the trunk♡",

④ And when they open it, surprise! It’s an unexpected celebration! ♡

That’s the flow of the surprise.

It’s also called trunk surprise or car surprise, providing a different kind of extraordinary and special feeling compared to doing it at home, restaurants, or hotels. It’s a thrilling and fun way to celebrate!＊

Personally, I've been intrigued by Car Surprise for several years.

I decided to try it out for a friend's birthday! ♡

This was the first attempt for our group, and I was worried about several things:

"How much should I inflate the balloons?"

"Will the size of the garland be okay?"

"What’s a natural way to get them to open the trunk?"

It felt like a completely unknown territory, but I tried my best to mimic the pictures I saw on Instagram, and the result...!

My friend was delighted, and it was a huge success! ♡

In this article, I want to summarize the preparations I made and the points to keep in mind!＊

Once I decided to do a Car Surprise, I gathered these items.＊

① Balloons: Rakuten

(I thought matching colors looked cuter, so I prepared a good number of gold confetti balloons and smaller white balloons.)

(I chose a classic white and gold garland to match the balloons.)

④ Hemp string: 100 yen shop

⑤ Mini clips: 100 yen shop

⑥ Photos: Printed at Seven-Eleven

(I hung memorable photos in a photo garland style! Square photos look more stylish than landscape ones, so I printed them in a square format with a white border using the multi-copy machine at Seven-Eleven.)

⑦ Cellophane tape and scissors for the day: 100 yen shop

(Cellophane tape is a bit weak, so I thought using duct tape for durability would be more reliable.)

⑧ Plus, the morning of the day, I thought having flowers would add a festive touch and could be given as a gift, so I bought a bouquet! ♡

On the Day, Gather 1 Hour Early to Prepare!

So on the day of the surprise, we gathered at the parking lot an hour early to start decorating the trunk!＊

We inflated the balloons with the pump and by mouth, and balanced the HAPPY BIRTHDAY garland and photo garland on either side, securing them with cellophane tape.

It's great if the garland can hang stylishly and loosely when viewed from a distance! ♡

I think I made about 8-10 confetti balloons and 15-20 smaller white balloons.

If there are too few, it will look lonely, so placing a lot to fill the trunk and around mid-height made for a beautiful display!

The bouquet went in a prominent position in the center!

Points to Note: 3 Things＊

Although I think I managed to create a pretty good Car Surprise despite it being my first time, there are three things I would like to be cautious about if I do it again.

≪① If it's windy, balloons will fly away≫

On the day we did the surprise, it was drizzling and windy, so balloons from the front would occasionally fly away every time the trunk was opened...

I tried my best to catch them running, as it would cause environmental harm, but that was quite the struggle...!

Therefore, I would like to avoid doing this on windy days or when rain is forecasted, and it’s also important to consider the wind direction when parking the car!＊

≪② The letters of the garland were visible before opening the trunk≫

This might be unavoidable, but when they were about to open the trunk, the letters "HAPPY BIRTHDAY" could be seen through the window...

Even if the window is tinted, it's easy to peek inside from a close distance. So having them close their eyes before opening the trunk might be a good idea!＊

≪③ Confetti was scattered when cleaning up≫

When the drive was over, during cleaning and packing up, the confetti balloons made a popping sound and burst, scattering confetti inside the car...!

It was a huge task to gather it all...!

Finally, when popping balloons, carefully use scissors to make a small cut at the opening and gently let the air out.

It's important to be cautious when doing this while driving!

What I thought after actually trying out Car Surprise is that it’s a smaller space compared to hotels or rooms, so you can decorate beautifully without putting in too much effort.
