When choosing a ring with lots of diamonds set on the band, there’s something I want you to know.
That is, "You might not be able to engrave it."
It’s common to engrave the names or wedding anniversary on wedding and engagement rings, but why might there be a possibility that you can't engrave on a ring adorned with a lot of diamonds?
There’s a "light hole" on the underside of the ring.
The reason you can’t engrave on the underside of the ring is that there’s a hole called a "light hole" or "under drilling."
Diamonds sparkle more the more light they receive.
The "light hole" is designed to let light in from underneath to enhance the diamond's natural brilliance.
This square window-like hole is the light hole.
If the eternity ring has a light hole, you cannot engrave on it.
Even in a half eternity ring, there may already be brand names, sizes, and numbering engraved, leaving very little space for additional engraving.
(This ring is a half eternity ring, but since the brand name is engraved, there is very little space available, and I was told that only 3 characters can be engraved…!)
Whether there is or isn't a light hole depends on the brand's policy, so if you want to engrave but wish to choose an eternity ring, make sure to select a brand that does not have light holes*
Things to know before choosing about "light holes"*
The "light hole" that makes diamonds sparkle even more.
However, due to the hole, there is less surface area, which is a blind spot as it may lead to the inability to engrave…!
(This also applies to very thin rings. Engravings can be difficult in some cases)
Particularly, in high-end brands, it seems to be common to have light holes.
☑ I want to choose a ring with lots of diamonds, like an eternity ring
☑ But I also want to engrave
Brides who think so should look for rings "without light holes."
