This year's Taiga drama has Akechi Mitsuhide as the main character.

Currently airing is the 2020 NHK Taiga drama "Kirin ga Kuru."

The setting is Gifu.

The story revolves around Akechi Mitsuhide, played by Hiroki Hasegawa.

Akechi Mitsuhide, as you all know, is the figure who betrayed and killed his lord Oda Nobunaga during the Honno-ji Incident.

And just a few days later, he was defeated by Toyotomi Hideyoshi, later known as Hashiba Hideyoshi, and died.

He has not been depicted as a main character until now, being mainly remembered as an enemy; thus, there is much attention on how he will be portrayed over the course of the year and how the story will reach its conclusion.

(I am also watching it every week, and the vividly colored imagery of the Sengoku period is refreshing and interesting.)

A unique confection inspired by Akechi Mitsuhide and Ayu's 'rebellion'

There is a confection inspired by Akechi Mitsuhide, the protagonist of "Kirin ga Kuru."

That is this, "Gekokujo Ayu."

This is a product from Tamaiya Honpo, a long-established confectionery store in Gifu, where the ayu, which is usually the prey, is depicted trying to gulp down a cormorant as a metaphor for rebellion.

The product concept is, "Having been devoured for 1300 years, is it alright to remain like this?"

The baked wagashi expressing Akechi Mitsuhide's rebellion with ayu and cormorant is full of humor.

(It somehow feels surreal...!)

It is also a certified product of the Kirin ga Kuru Local Executive Committee*

What does it taste like?

Tamaiya Honpo's Gekokujo Ayu comes in two flavors for the cormorant part: matcha or brown sugar. The ayu part is made with wasanbon sugar using rice flour.

The prices are 500 yen for one large piece and 1000 yen for four small pieces.

A delightful present for history buffs and Taiga drama fans

It is sure to be appreciated by those who love history and Taiga dramas. It is recommended as a small gift, wedding favors, or souvenirs for return trips home*
