At Daiso, there is a product that has been described as "It's a mystery that such a good item can be bought at a 100 yen store."

That product is this soap.

It is a Marseille soap made by the company Savonnerie du Midi, which is said to be called the "King's Soap."

Savonnerie du Midi is a long-established soap manufacturer founded in 1894, with a history of over 120 years.

Marseille Soap Available at a Daiso Price

While it is indeed amazing that such a historically significant foreign soap is priced at 100 yen, what is particularly noteworthy is that this soap is a Marseille soap.

In fact, Marseille soap (known as "savon de Marseille" in French) has very strict regulations, and currently, there are only four companies in France that produce savon de Marseille using the traditional method established by the Sun King Louis XIV.

(When Marseille soap became popular in France, many inferior products were produced, leading Louis XIV to decree that anything made outside of this traditional method cannot be called savon de Marseille. This is why savon de Marseille is referred to as the "King's Soap.")

The standards for savon de Marseille are stricter than those for Marseille soap, and it seems that the soap sold at Daiso is only one type (olive) that qualifies as savon de Marseille, while the other three types are just Marseille soap.

Therefore, the fact that "savon de Marseille can be bought at a 100 yen store" is indeed big news!

Daiso sold it once in 2018, but it quickly sold out, earning it the nickname of a phantom soap.

After that, it was re-released in early 2019, and it seems that some stores still carry it.
