240,000 Likes on a Wedding Photo ♡
Recently, this tweet became a hot topic.
It has gone viral worldwide and received 240,000 likes in Japan, with the story of "a deceased grandmother becoming a butterfly and appearing in almost all the wedding photos."
It seems there is a performance called Butterfly Release!
While researching butterflies and weddings, I learned about a performance called "Butterfly Release."
It's not very common in Japan, but it seems to be a popular performance abroad.
In this way, the bride and groom release butterflies that are kept in a box.
Alternatively, it seems that all the guests can release one butterfly each.
It's similar to a balloon release but with butterflies! ♡
Here's what it looks like in video form ♡
✅ Butterfly Release from a Basket*
(around 13 minutes and 41 seconds)
✅ During the ceremony, all the guests participate in the Butterfly Release!
The butterflies released in this way do not just fly away; they seem to land on humans too.
While watching photos and videos of Butterfly Releases, I was surprised to see many pictures of butterflies approaching and landing on people during what seems to be a relatively long photo shooting time.
✅ Landing on a bouquet*
✅ Landing on fingertips.
Here's how it works behind the scenes.
The butterflies used for the Butterfly Release are live butterflies.
They are usually delivered in a box via cool delivery in a dormant state.
When they arrive, the butterflies are asleep, so to ensure they fly energetically during the event, they are warmed to room temperature for a few hours before the Butterfly Release.
Then, they are placed in a basket or folded into paper one by one and handed to the guests like this.
Here’s a video showing the preparation for the Butterfly Release.
Knowing this behind-the-scenes process makes me feel a bit sorry for the butterflies... it's kind of scary... so I don't think I could unfold the paper holding the butterfly...
Butterflies are considered auspicious symbols in both Christianity and Buddhism around the world.
Due to their nature of undergoing complete metamorphosis—from egg to larva to pupa to butterfly—they are seen as symbols of human life, death, and resurrection, and are believed to carry the souls of the deceased.
(So, it's a story that perfectly aligns with the globally discussed grandmother's tale.)
Therefore, using butterflies, which are such symbols, in a ceremony can be seen as wonderful and visually enchanting and romantic.
