"Can You Believe It's Edible?! The 'Island Cake' that Turns the Sea and Islands into a 360-Degree Dessert is Making Waves Abroad."
2020.10.07 published
I was surprised to see the tag #island cake!
A friend living abroad (in Canada) told me about an amazing cake.
This cake is called island cake.
It’s designed to represent an entire island and the sea, all as one cake!*
Isn’t this just incredible.....???
You can look at it from 360 degrees, and it has an overwhelming presence, just like a diorama.
(At first glance, you might not even think it’s a cake...!)
It looks so realistic that it resembles a model. If this were presented at a wedding, I would be genuinely surprised!
Is it edible? What is it made of?
This island cake is almost like a piece of art.
Since it's called a cake, I believe it should be edible, but what is it made of?
Upon researching How-to videos on YouTube,
- The terrain part is made by carving out sponge cake and applying chocolate or whipped cream.
- The sea is created by solidifying light blue jelly.
- Trees and land are made by crumbling cookie ingredients.
It seems that making it by oneself would indeed require specialized skills and knowledge, but the person who first thought of it is amazing...! It looks delicious...!
(Though it’s foreign, this recipe video was easy to understand!)
Various island cakes exist*
From here, I will introduce various decorations of island cakes.
<①>
An island cake with two towering mountains.
The white waves are also expressed, making it three-dimensional.
<②>
This one even has a sandy beach!
The gradient colors that suggest the depth of the sea are fantastic.
<③>
I discovered an island cake that has an oil painting-like atmosphere.
It is simply stunning.
<④>
A decoration with palm trees♩
It reminds me of the world of Moana...!♡
<⑤>
A ship cake topper on top*
<⑥>
Making it cupcake-sized gives it a cute miniature feel(?).
If it were made into a wedding cake, people would be shocked....!!
The island cake made abroad, capturing an entire island as a cake.
It’s so realistic, three-dimensional, and impressive that the fact that this is an eatable cake is just amazing...!
If I were to make it a wedding cake:
- For someone who grew up on an island
- For someone who loves the sea or remote islands
- For someone who loves the world of Moana
- For someone wanting artistic decorations
it might be a great fit♩
It might also be nice to express the world of ukiyo-e artist Katsushika Hokusai....!
It’s a cake that I would love to see and eat at least once in my life.
