A 400-Year-Old Traditional Japanese Confectionery in Nagoya
Have you heard of “Kashou Hanakikyō,” a traditional Japanese sweet shop located in Mizuho Ward, Nagoya City, Aichi Prefecture?
Despite its modern storefront, “Hanakikyō” is a long-established shop with a 400-year tradition.
The predecessor, Kikyōya, reportedly presented Japanese sweets to the lord of Owari during the Tokugawa Shogunate.
While preserving traditional techniques, they continue to create unique Japanese sweets with innovative touches.
While boasting such a rich history, “Hanakikyō” is also proactive in creating new forms of Japanese sweets.
They combine the glamorous flavors of champagne and cream with the designs and ingredients of Japanese sweets.
“Hanakikyō” aims to create Japanese sweets that resonate with the lifestyles of various generations♡
Here are some of “Hanakikyō”'s popular Japanese sweets featured on social media♡
Nagoya “Hanakikyō” Sweets ①
The first item we introduce is the “An Toast Monaka,” inspired by the “An Toast,” which represents Nagoya culture!
It’s a new sensation Monaka where you place sweet red bean paste on a toast-shaped wafer to enjoy.
Inside the package, you'll find two types of red bean paste, "Tsubu An" and "Tsubu An Butter," along with six individually wrapped Monaka and a special knife for spreading.
You can enjoy spreading the red bean paste on the Monaka yourself♡
Nagoya “Hanakikyō” Sweets ② Gofuku
The “Gofuku” is a popular Japanese sweet to bring to celebratory occasions.
“Gofuku” refers to the five blessings in life: longevity, wealth, health, good virtue, and a good end (fulfilling one's destiny).
It comes packed in a wooden box with five colorful sweet dumplings and jelly, offering a special feel♡
Just looking at the beautiful pastel-colored dumplings is enough to make you feel happy.
Upon opening the lid of the wooden box, you can’t help but sigh in awe at its beauty.
Nagoya “Hanakikyō” Sweets ③ Champagne Kango
The “Champagne Kango” is a dried sweet made with lots of champagne mixed into Kango (a type of jelly).
Kango is made from a mixture of sugar, agar, and syrup that is dried.
It’s quite rare to find a Japanese sweet made with champagne, isn’t it? I'm curious about its flavor.
When you open the box, you’ll find square pieces of jelly that look like frosted glass and pale pink heart-shaped jelly nestled inside.
It's also perfect as a wedding favor♡
Nagoya “Hanakikyō” Sweets ④ Fruit Mochi
One of the most popular items at “Hanakikyō” is the fruit mochi made with seasonal fruits wrapped in “Hauju” mochi.
Here we have Muscat mochi, wrapped around two grapes from Nagano Prefecture.
The combination of fresh fruit and the fluffy Hauju mochi is addictive♡
The “Setoka” mochi wrapped around the rich-tasting premium orange, “Setoka.”
The strawberry mochi wrapped around “Tochiotome” strawberries from Aichi Prefecture. The touch of white bean paste enhances its elegant sweetness♡
The fruits offered change with the seasons, making you want to visit each season to try them all!
