Choosing the Material for Wedding Rings.

Hello, this is Haruno Tsuzaki, the editor-in-chief of marry*

We received a consultation about a dilemma on marry's Instagram.

*************************

The other day, I went to choose a ring!

When it comes to wedding rings, I had the image of platinum, but the store staff said:

"Gold is actually more expensive than platinum right now."

"Everyone overseas wears gold!"

"All the bag metal fittings are gold, right?"

For some reason, they were promoting gold 😂

After comparing for a while, I initially felt the gold ring was casual, but it started to look cute because it matched my skin tone.

However, I also like the regular platinum color (silver color) as it has the wedding ring feel.

To those who have also struggled between choosing gold and platinum for their wedding rings, what did you decide...?

It’s true that once you start to think about the material of the ring, you can’t stop!

With fashion rings, you can just buy more, but both wedding rings and engagement rings are typically just one each....!

Here are the responses we received.

【Response 1】

Excuse me for the sudden interruption.

I usually wear gold accessories, so I was thinking I'd go with gold without hesitation, but when I tried it on, the one that felt like the perfect wedding ring was platinum. I was looking for a half eternity, so it might have sparkled even more 😂

However, I struggled until the very end!

With a gold ring being half eternity, from a distance, it looked like platinum, so I could enjoy both up close and on the wedding day, and I thought it wouldn’t look out of place wearing the platinum engagement ring while going out somewhere! So I was torn between the two.

Ultimately, I chose platinum, which initially left a good impression, but I still love gold too, so I’m thinking of purchasing a ring in gold of the same design to celebrate our 10th anniversary with my husband. I completely understand the feeling of being torn! 😭

I hope you find a beautiful ring 💍

【Response 2】

I wanted the same color as my husband’s, but gold didn’t suit him, so I chose platinum! They say platinum is valuable and popular, but in the end, I chose the color based on my own preference!

【Response 3】

At first, I definitely wanted gold or rose gold!!!

But when I went to see them, I found platinum beautiful too, and I was really torn 😂

In the end, I chose a platinum base with my husband’s ring in gold, and mine has lines of pink gold 💍

Maybe it’s because my pair ring was pink gold…

I felt like platinum has more of that wedding ring vibe and the embedded diamond blended beautifully, so I’m really glad I went with the platinum base ☺️

I also like that we each have gold or pink gold lines, it’s stylish and I love it♡

I hope you can find a wonderful ring that both of you are happy with… 💍💕

【Response 4】

How about a combination ring of silver or white gold and gold?

【Response 5】

I felt a bit uneasy about how the store staff recommended gold not because it suited you but maybe due to its expense or appearance. I think it’s good to find a ring that aligns with your image!

Before I went to choose my wedding ring, I was considering pink gold or gold for how well they match the skin, but when I actually went to see it, the classic platinum color matched the impression I had of a wedding ring, so I went with platinum!

However, I also think gold can be very cute 💕

I hope you can find a wonderful wedding ring!

【Response 6】

I work as a wedding ring salesperson 💍

There are indeed trends in wedding rings!

In the past, since the value of gold was high, rings without diamonds and no engravings on the inside would be chosen to ensure they could be turned into cash if needed.✨

It’s recommended to remove rings in strong sulfuric hot springs as there’s a risk of discoloration. The more frequently you remove it, the greater the risk of losing it.

Over time, yellowing can occur (this is called burning).

In recent years, platinum essentially holds higher value, so it’s hard to imagine needing to sell a wedding ring because of money!

The pure white shine is fitting for marriage, and unlike gold, it has little risk of discoloration in daily life, so many people think platinum is most suitable for a wedding ring that is worn continuously 💐

White gold is not platinum but is instead something that has been coated or contains silver that can discolor with oxidation or hot springs 🥺

Some people choose gold wedding rings because they are stylish, cute, and have a unique feel! 🧸

If you opt for gold, I think you should choose a store with a robust after-service (like having it free forever) to assist with discoloration issues♫︎

If you want uniformity with other jewelry or rings, I think that’s a valid consideration!

What’s also important is what you both value when choosing the ring ❤️

Whether it’s that wedding ring vibe, the pair feeling, the compatibility with your skin, or your design preferences, since it’s a ring you’ll wear forever, I recommend not losing sight of the important points!

【Response 7】

I was also torn between Hawaiian jewelry in gold and a standard platinum design two years ago.

However, since it’s something I’ll wear every day, I felt it’s important to consider ease of maintenance and material softness. Since it’s not just for me, I discussed it with my husband and ended up going with platinum.

Gold may have higher value, but that’s more about “when you sell it.”

I think it’s rare to sell a wedding ring, so it’s probably unnecessary to put too much value on that.

Moreover, gold is softer than platinum, and most are coated, so there’s a chance that what you thought was gold may show silver underneath.

If it’s all gold, it shouldn’t be bought at a low price, so I think it's best to get thorough information from another salesperson regarding coating, maintenance, hardness, etc., before purchasing.

If you really want a different color from what you decide on, it might be a good idea to buy it as a fashion ring on your wedding anniversary a few years later!

【Response 8】

I wanted to take the best of both worlds, so I opted for a combo ring 🥰 My partner has a gold and platinum combination, and I have a pink gold and platinum one 💍💓

【Response 9】

My husband settled for white gold, as it suits him well (almost white but goes well with skin better than platinum).

【Response 10】

Sorry for the sudden DM 💦

I also hesitated between pink gold and platinum, but considering that I’ll wear it not just now but even when I’m an old lady, and for ceremonies, I thought platinum might be better!

Pink gold is so cute, and I was torn, but I convinced myself that a wedding ring isn't just for style...

【Response 11】

Several top shop staff said platinum doesn’t discolor, so that made me settle on platinum.

【Response 12】

Ignoring popularity and trends, I chose a color that suited my skin!

Yellow gold it is!

【Response 13】

I initially wanted pink gold, while my partner preferred platinum. I struggled because it seemed like the wedding ring vibe would disappear when displayed together, but I chose pink gold, which blends well with my skin, after hearing the store staff say, “You should choose what you like since it's something you will wear forever!” 🥺♡

I don’t think this advice is very useful, but I believe you should choose a design and material you won’t regret wearing forever, regardless of trends ◎

I’m happy even though my partner has a different color!

【Response 14】

I was also very torn, but because I usually wear gold accessories and wanted something special, I went with platinum, which is considered a wedding staple ✨

If someone’s skin tone is lighter, platinum may blend better, and more importantly, choosing a ring that you desire is paramount, more than what the shop staff think 💍 Since it's something you wear daily 🥰❤️

【Response 15】

I chose platinum, but tested several rings to find one that made my fingers look slender and beautiful!

I don’t think there’s a good or bad with platinum or gold, so it’s best to purchase a ring that looks good and matches your skin!✨

I think if you decide based on what the shop staff said, you might regret it later 😔

I hope you find a beautiful ring that suits you! 🙏✨

【Response 16】

I was also torn between gold and platinum. Many celebrities wear platinum, and there are more designs available in platinum, so I went with that. As a result, my platinum ring has been less prone to scratches and has maintained its beautiful condition compared to my husband’s gold ring, so I’m glad I went with platinum.

【Response 17】

Ignoring talk of value, I thought about which design had the cutest color, and it turned out to be yellow gold. I’m very satisfied with how cute it is 🥺

【Response 18】

Why not choose based on your skin tone?

We’re both cool-toned, so we went with silver ✨

【Response 19】

Without hesitation, I chose platinum! It seems that platinum is resistant to water, shock, and dirt.

【Response 20】

I went with gold 😌

The reason was that I wanted a design that wouldn’t be shared with others and that gold gives off a more stylish vibe than platinum. Platinum tends to convey a harder impression, but gold doesn’t, and I like it!

Depending on the store, even within gold, there are various shades like green gold, yellow gold, pink gold, and champagne gold, so I think it’s good to look for a color you enjoy.

I chose a gold shade that isn't too cute so I can wear it as I age 🌼

【Response 21】

I also struggled, but I ultimately thought of platinum when I thought of a wedding ring!! And since I thought that if I didn’t buy platinum now, I probably wouldn’t in the future (considering that gold might be presented as necklaces or rings in the future 🤣), I chose platinum☻️🙌🏻

【Response 22】

Congratulations on your upcoming celebration! I chose platinum, but a close friend has a pink gold wedding ring that I envied deeply ☺️ I found the unique feeling of not seeing it often to be wonderful, and the shine seemed to have a subtle luxury rather than casual. I wonder if it depends on the size of the diamond or the design. Enjoy your ring shopping! 🍀

【Response 23】

Since my engagement ring was gold and it matched beautifully, I thought it was very cute and might consider gold for my wedding ring! However, I still found platinum hard to resist.

After contemplating, I thought let’s layer them! So I went with the engagement ring in gold and the wedding ring in platinum! 😂

【Response 24】

Since I initially planned to get platinum, this might not be very helpful, but when I compared wearing, I felt platinum had more weight, which made me feel a sense of tension as if I was wearing a wedding ring...! So I decided on platinum!

【Response 25】

I went for a double design ring in white gold and yellow gold ❤️

I love that it can coordinate with both silver and gold accessories or watches!

【Response 26】

I struggled a lot with this decision, but a staff member pointed out that as one ages, platinum will blend better with the skin than gold, so I chose platinum 🥺

【Response 27】

I chose a piece that combined yellow gold and platinum 💓 The edge is in yellow gold, which blends well with my skin tone, and I really love it 💓

【Response 28】

I think rose gold would be great!

It's a unique material original to the Siena Rose brand, which mixes platinum and gold.

【Response 29】

My husband said we should buy platinum when we get older, and I thought I could wear stylish gold casually only while young, so I went with gold!

【Response 30】

It seems that overseas, the concept of wedding rings is not necessarily a lifetime item, and many people replace them as they age, leading to the popularity of gold!

I genuinely think it's better to decide based on your personal preference rather than on value or the opinion of store staff!

In the end, it’s the bride who will wear it, not the shop staff♪

【Response 31】

I think it ultimately comes down to preference! I chose gold, and my husband chose platinum 💍

Since there are various gold options like yellow and pink, I think something that looks cute on is best ❣️

【Response 32】

Since wedding rings are meant to be worn frequently, I went with gold, which matches well. Since my engagement ring is platinum, that plays a part too...

【Response 33】

I faced the same dilemma! I ended up choosing a platinum ring with a splash of pink gold integrated into it ^^

【Response 34】

For my engagement ring, I went with platinum / for my wedding ring, I chose gold!

【Response 35】

Since I don't particularly like ordinary or safe choices, I wanted pink gold and went out to buy it, but...

I found that it didn’t convey a wedding ring feeling, and gold may be something I eventually wish to purchase as a fashion ring. I realized I wouldn’t likely find platinum in any other context, so I bought platinum instead!

If you plan to replace the ring in the future, it’s fine to choose a design you love, but I wanted something to last a lifetime, so I chose platinum and I am satisfied! ☺️ (It hasn't arrived yet, though... 💍)

【Response 36】

In our house, I was all for gold, and since 18K was cheaper than silver… (laugh)

My husband preferred silver, so even though they’re wedding rings, we’re both wearing our preferences! It seems more people are okay with not matching these days!

There aren’t many people wearing gold rings, so it's nice not to blend in, and you can express individuality! 😽💕

Additionally, as we age, fingers tend to get thicker, so a thicker gold ring may be more comfortable to wear, as the salesperson informed me! 💍

【Response 37】

I was leaning toward platinum but ended up buying a gold piece after a recommendation from the store staff!

I learned that gold is mainstream overseas, and it was suggested that it would blend nicely with the skin as one gets older.

I often interact with older people at work, and I feel like I see many wearing gold and appreciate its less common look! ☺️

【Response 38】

Since I usually wear gold accessories, I intended to have a gold wedding ring!

When I tried it in the store, it was lovely but over time as I observed, I felt I might not likely purchase a silver ring in the future, and surprisingly came to like the platinum ring, so I ultimately chose the platinum with that classic wedding ring presence! It has been a several years, and I'm absolutely satisfied!

Do you mean when the staff mentions that having it will increase its value?

If you’re buying it for style; maybe that could be a factor, but you really shouldn’t worry about the price when it comes to wedding rings, right? 😂 The salesperson’s comments were somewhat puzzling!

【Response 39】

I also struggled between gold, pink gold, and platinum.

But even when I was in my twenties, I imagined myself wearing the ring at 40, 50, 60, 70, and 80, and decided on platinum when I thought it would match my future self. Also, a fear of discoloration impacted my decision.

【Response 40】

I don’t know why the store staff pushed gold so much... 😂

But I chose platinum for my engagement ring and gold for my wedding ring✨ I always thought gold wedding rings would be unique in Japan as I didn't see them often and thought they were fabulous, and upon trying several, it matched my skin exactly, so I chose gold💕 Since it’s half eternity, it’s not overly flashy, but when worn with the engagement ring, it looks like a combination ring that I adore 🥰

I think you might be contemplating a lifelong investment with your question, but you can also consider personal preference or whether it fits your fashion! I hope you find a beautiful ring 💕

【Response 41】

Greedy me went for a mix of both platinum and gold in my ring! (laugh)

【Response 42】

I handmade my ring, but I also struggled with the material.

While I found the classic platinum appealing, I was also interested in somewhat unique gold…

However, I wondered if it might look too casual, similar to a fashion ring?

After discussing together, we settled on white gold! It seems like a color resembling platinum or silver at first glance, but upon closer inspection, it does have the warmth of gold 🙆‍♀️

It seems there are many types of gold, so I hope you find one you love ☺️💕

Other accessories also matter!

I’ve shared all the replies that have come in to marry*

For myself, while I used to love gold, I've recently been matching all my jewelry with platinum and white gold.

(That’s why my nails are usually glittery in silver tones!)

But when I recently visited a jewelry store, the staff mentioned, “While everything is now white-toned, if you gradually incorporate a bit of gold, you can enjoy various combinations of accessories~~,” and I started chatting with them!

Gold jewelry is cute... I feel that sticking only to silver currently feels a bit limiting, although it's not bad. I somewhat feel that way, so I totally understand the depth of the question asked by the inquirer!
