The Best Thing I Bought Recently!

I recently bought an oral irrigator, commonly called a "water flosser" or "jet washer"!

A jet washer is a device that removes dirt between teeth using a water stream. It washes away dirt that can't be fully removed with a toothbrush (like dirt removed by dental floss or toothpicks) with a powerful blast of water.

I had known about it for several years, but since I floss every day, I thought a jet washer was unnecessary...

However, I realized that if I bought one, my husband could also use it, and it was a bit cheaper during a Rakuten sale, so I decided to buy it on impulse. Once I tried it out, I was extremely satisfied. I think every day that I should have bought it sooner!

I Bought the Doltz Jet Washer!

The most famous jet washer from a major Japanese manufacturer is Panasonic's "Doltz." There are other foreign brands and lesser-known manufacturers, but I chose Doltz (which was around 15,000 yen).

The reasons I chose it are:

✅ High ratings in reviews

✅ Expectation that the performance would be good given the price

✅ Since it's an item that goes in the mouth, I feel more secure with a Japanese-made product

✅ There were many reviews saying that lesser-known brands broke quickly

(Reference Twitter reviews)

There Are Four Types of Doltz

Currently, there are four models of the Panasonic Doltz available for sale, each with different features.

① EW-DJ74 (around 15,000 yen)

A model designed to be used in the bathroom. It can hold a lot of water, allowing for long usage, but it's large and takes up space.

② EW-DJ54 (the one I bought, around 15,000 yen)

A waterproof, cordless model. It can be used in the bath, but it doesn't hold much water, so you'll need to add more during use.

③ EW-DJ63 (around 10,000 yen)

A cheaper model than the EW-DJ74.

④ EW-DJ10 (around 5,000 yen)

A model that can be used on the go.

I chose it because:

✅ I don’t want a large machine in the bathroom

✅ I saw reviews saying it could get messy if used in the bathroom, so I wanted to use it in the bath.

Thus, I went with the waterproof, cordless EW-DJ54 model.

The size of the EW-DJ54 when placed in the bathroom is about this. The main unit alone is about 20 cm, and with the ultrasonic water flow nozzle attached, it's about 29 cm – larger than a big hand soap size.

The ultrasonic water flow nozzle (there's also a point polishing nozzle and tongue cleaning nozzle) can be stored on the charger, and we share the main unit while just changing the nozzle (the nozzles can have different cap colors to avoid mix-ups).

How Is It in Practice?

After using the Doltz, my impression can be summed up in one word: "Incredible, almost to the point of pain."

I had read reviews that said it could be painful and cause bleeding if you have periodontal disease or unhealthy gums, but I thought to myself, "It can't be that painful." So, I casually tried the highest setting (5), and it was quite painful.

I believe you'll really regret using it casually if you do, so I recommend starting at the lowest setting.

At first, I was surprised by how strong the water pressure felt, and although it was painful at first, when adjusted to a comfortable level, it felt like getting a cleaning at the dentist.

After cleaning, my teeth felt smooth and shiny, like just returning from the dentist♡

I tried flossing as usual after using the jet washer, and I was amazed that almost all the dirt was gone. Flossing seems unnecessary now, and it feels like I could just live with the jet washer at home.

I’ve read reviews suggesting that the water used after jet washing smells like a sewer (I didn’t notice it too much, though!).

It's true that for people who don’t have a habit of flossing, the jet washer can effectively remove dirt from between the teeth and periodontal pockets, so it might not be an exaggeration at all to call it powerful.

Differences from Floss: Pros and Cons

Although I'm very satisfied with the jet washer, I thought flossing (with dental floss) was sufficient before buying it.

I summarized the pros and cons of using a jet washer versus flossing. Please consider them as a reference.

◆ Advantages of the Jet Washer

✅ No waste

✅ The water pressure feels great

✅ It easily cleans hard-to-reach places

✅ It can remove dirt that floss can't (e.g., back of molars and gaps)

✅ Considering that you'd have to keep buying floss for the family, it might actually be cost-effective in the long run…?

◆ Disadvantages of the Jet Washer

✅ It’s loud

✅ It costs electricity

✅ It takes up space

✅ The initial cost is high (around 15,000 yen for a model that can be used in the bath)

✅ It’s not portable (although there are portable types, floss is smaller and lighter)

I'm Very Satisfied with My Jet Washer!

The jet washer can remove dental dirt with water pressure. It’s amazing that I can care for my teeth at home like when I go to the dentist every day. I doubt I’ll ever let it go!

My husband, who previously didn’t have a habit of flossing, said, "Using the water flosser is a complete difference. My teeth feel smooth. It’s not as much hassle as I thought, and it’s comfortable.” He seemed very satisfied.

The model that can be used in the bath costs around 15,000 yen. If you are planning to give or receive a wedding gift in that price range, I think considering a jet washer would be a good idea!

While the initial cost is high compared to floss which can be bought for around 300 yen, dental health is the most important thing. I want to ensure that my husband and I can smile, eat, and live comfortably with our own teeth even at the age of 80. I plan to take care of our dental health with the jet washer.
