注意点 When Sending "Private Postcards"*
Postcards come in two types: "regular postcards" and "private postcards."
A "regular postcard" is a typical postcard that can be purchased at a post office or convenience store, does not require a stamp, and can be directly dropped in a mailbox.
In contrast, a "private postcard" is not sold by the post office.
It refers to handmade postcards or postcards sold at tourist spots that require an additional 63 yen stamp to be affixed or must be sent as prepaid mail.
Private postcards can be:
- Made with different paper materials
- Enhanced with embossing or foil stamping
- Finished with matte or clear coatings on the surface
This allows for stylish and original DIY options, making them popular for wedding scenes.
With high freedom of design, many brides create handmade postcards for replying to invitations, announcing marriage, informing about moving to a new home, or postponements. ***
However, when creating private postcards, it's not just about adhering to size and weight; there are specific rules to follow!
In fact, there are some lesser-known, detailed rules that you need to be aware of......!
I Didn't Know! Rule #1 for Private Postcards
First, you must include the text "郵便はがき" (yūbin hagaki) or "POST CARD" on the address side of the postcard.
The position should be at the top of the postcard, just like on a regular postcard.
If this notation is missing, it will be treated the same as a regular letter (type 1 mail), and you will have to pay 84 yen instead of 63 yen, so be careful.
I Didn't Know! Rule #2 for Private Postcards
When creating the box for the 7-digit postal code, the color must be a bright red (朱色, aka vermilion). Using blue or black is not allowed.
The reason is that if the address-reading machines encounter blue or black, they may misinterpret the information due to interference.
However, the postal code box itself is not mandatory, so you can leave it out.
I Didn't Know! Rule #3 for Private Postcards
The standard size for a postcard is 148mm x 100mm.
However, the established range for private postcards allows a minimum of 140mm x 90mm and a maximum of 154mm x 107mm, giving a leeway of about 1cm*
Be careful, as even being 1mm smaller or larger will classify it as oversized mail.
Additionally, the shape must be "rectangular" only*
Features like rounded corners or jagged edges would normally classify the postcard as oversized; however, if they are within 2mm of the specified dimensions, it seems they can still be accepted as postcards.
In that case, be extra careful with the size when making your own.
I Didn't Know! Rule #4 for Private Postcards
Finally, concerning the color of the address side.
The background color of the address side must be either white or light-colored.
Even though you might design the total background of the postcard in dark colors like black or navy blue, or in colorful designs, it is necessary to use a white border or label for the address section to enhance readability.*
Essential Knowledge to Remember*
In summary, these are some surprisingly unknown rules to keep in mind when creating private postcards.
I was unaware that the text "郵便はがき" or "POST CARD" was absolutely necessary, so this was educational for me...!
Even after the wedding, I think there will be opportunities to create private postcards for things like New Year's cards. When that time comes, please remember these essential rules.*
