Position of the Bride and Groom*

At weddings, the position of the bride and groom is predetermined.

The groom is on the right 🤵🏻‍♂

The bride is on the left 👰🏻‍♀

Whether at the ceremony or the reception, this arrangement represents the basic and correct position for both.

This tradition originates from an old European saying, where men carried swords in their right hands and used shields in their left hands to protect women while battling.

Nowadays, instead of a sword, the groom holds a glove in his right hand and escorts the bride with his left hand. This is the traditional style♡

Pay Attention to the Exit Position! [There Are Rules Depending on the Venue]

From here, let’s focus on the position during the exit after the ceremony.

I learned from freelance wedding planner Tadafumi Kasuya that this is something all brides should be aware of, so I want to share it in detail.

In fact, due to the rules of different venues,

It seems that sometimes brides cannot walk down the aisle on the side where their guests are post-ceremony.

What Does This Mean?

In Christian ceremonies, the seating arrangement for guests mirrors the positions of the bride and groom, with the groom's guests sitting on the right and the bride's guests on the left.

And when it’s time to exit.

Normally, the bride and groom simply turn around and

🤵🏻‍♂ The groom walks to the right where his family and friends are seated.

👰🏻‍♀ The bride walks to the left where her family and friends are seated.

You would think it would go like this...!

Just like this ***

However, here it is!

Depending on the venue, sometimes the bride and groom are directed to adjust their positions to [the correct position = groom on the right and bride on the left] before exiting.

(This arrangement is formal, so they tend to follow the manual and do it this way.)

But when they are adjusted to the correct position, it can lead to a situation where, as shown in the diagram below, their guests are on the opposite side...!

Doesn’t this feel a bit disappointing...?

During the exit, it’s such a joy for both the bride and groom to pass right by their invited guests, engaging in conversations like "Congratulations♡" and "Thank you♡," waving, making eye contact, and taking lots of photos.

In reports from past brides, it’s common to see sentiments like, "I finally got to see my friends’ faces during the exit, and it felt reassuring and moving,"

And brides during an exit are faced towards their family and friends, looking genuinely happy and enjoying the moment.

Therefore, walking on the side where their guests are during the exit is essential♡

Many people, including myself, might have assumed they could do this effortlessly,

But I was shocked to see Tadafumi Kasuya’s post on Instagram, saying, "Depending on the venue's rules, the positions may revert to the correct position, making your guests far away, so please be cautious."

At the same time, I thought, I’m glad I found this out now before the ceremony~~~!♡

Confirm With Your Planner!

So before you have the thought, "Huh? I’m on the opposite side from my guests😭, this isn’t what I imagined for my exit scene😭," it’s best to confirm your exit position with your planner in advance.

According to Tadafumi Kasuya, in addition to saying, “I want to walk on my guest side,” it’s also a good idea to ask to see actual wedding photo albums for confirmation.

Since planners don’t usually watch the ceremony (they aren’t always in the venue), this is certainly a more reliable way to convey your vision comfortably.

Even for informal ceremonies, you definitely want to check this out*

For Yourself and for Your Guests!

The exit scene of the ceremony.

If, due to the venue's manual or rules, you cannot walk on the side where your guests are (and weren’t informed beforehand).

It would definitely feel a bit disappointing, and there would likely be regrets, with guests possibly feeling, "Hey, [name], you’re on the other side😭, we won't be able to get good photos."

Tadafumi Kasuya also said, "It's for both of you but also for your guests. So, rather than assuming, make sure to verify for a satisfactory exit and flower shower," and I truly believe that.

I hope that all brides can experience a wonderful exit moment at their ceremonies.♡
