Peeling Off Old Skin: Trying Out the At-Home Korean Dermaskin Peeling!
2022.07.21 published
Home peeling is intriguing
Peeling is a care method that removes old keratin, helping to reduce skin roughness and the darkening of pores.
Many people might be regularly doing keratin care with easy-to-use commercial peeling gels (👇 like this one!) in the bath.
When applied to dry skin, it feels refreshing as the keratin flakes off, right?
But.
There's also a more intensive "home peeling kit" that you can use over about 5 days to 1 week at home.*
What's so good about it?
Home peeling is quite a standard beauty care method in Korea,
many people do it a week before important occasions, such as:
- A date with a boyfriend
- An event or concert of an idol
- A wedding they are invited to
It seems many people do it for significant timings. (Isn't ZeoSkin the most famous?)
It condenses the skin turnover cycle, which is normally said to be 24 days, into just a few days, shedding old skin and promoting the regeneration of new skin.
The great thing is, "you can create smooth, beautiful egg-like skin at your favorite timing."
It's also wonderful that you can perform more intensive keratin care compared to commercial gels, all at a lesser cost and more conveniently than going to a cosmetic clinic.
There are brides-to-be who are using this for bridal beauty, and I thought, "I want to try it too!" So, I found a kit that I've been seeing often on Instagram and Twitter, purchased it at a good deal on Rakuten, and actually tried it.
I've never been to a beauty clinic before, and this was my first time trying an item that has downtime, even if it's just for a few days.
I was half excited and half anxious about how my skin would change.
I summarized how my skin looked over about a week, so if you're curious about what a home peeling kit is like, I hope this helps!
This is what I tried
I tried the product "BQCELL Dermaskin Peeling."
Here are the points I liked about it:
- You can wash your face and apply makeup starting the day after peeling (yay!)
- Because it uses herbal peeling containing naturally derived ingredients, unlike commercial peeling gels, it can penetrate effective ingredients deep into the skin
- Many reviews mentioned it's low irritation and painless
My skin had always shown noticeable pores, roughness, and dryness, so it was far from being described as smooth and beautiful.
But I hoped that after doing this, my skin would become smoother and brighter overall in a week!
Started at night*
First, I apply the included peeling agent.
It has a syringe-like shape.
I spread this peeling agent over my entire face, avoiding the eye area.
(For those who are concerned about specific areas like nose pores or cheek acne scars, it's okay to apply only there.)
After application, you have to leave it on for 7 hours, so it's recommended to do it right before going to bed.
It dried relatively quickly, but to avoid dirtying the bed, I laid a towel on the pillow that night.
The herbal scent was a bit noticeable, but it wasn't a problem once I fell asleep.
The next morning, I washed my face with water to remove the peeling agent, which had dried and turned into a mud-like texture. I started using sunscreen from that day!
I applied it over my entire face, but I still had about half of the peeling agent left, so it seems like I can use it for two applications.
Monitoring progress*
⏰
After 12 hours, I noticed a bit of redness appearing.
⏰
After one day, there was still a slight redness.
Since the peeling agent contains spiky micro-particles, it felt a little prickly when touched with my palm.
My cheeks felt a bit warm, like on the night of a sunburn.
For skincare, I only used a refreshing toner.
⏰
Two days later, I realized, "Hey, isn't this peeling off...?" and gradually changes started appearing.
It seemed that the effect appeared quicker on my nose and mouth, probably because I applied the peeling agent more heavily there.
It seems it's best to wash my face with water only to avoid removing the micro-particles too soon.
⏰
On the third day, which was said to show the best results, the small dry patches on my nose and mouth shed quite a bit.
It was noticeable enough that my family jokingly said, "You have crumbs on your face!" 🤣
You can wear makeup, but if you have work or plans, it might be better to avoid around 3 to 5 days after application.
At this point, I applied the included honey-colored ampoule (serum) for thorough hydration.*
⏰
By the fourth day, the skin on my cheeks began to shed over a larger area. It felt like molting, and I was happy!
I learned that forcibly peeling off the shedding skin isn't good, so I let it happen naturally.
⏰
I had heard that some people finish peeling by the fifth day, but I still had some small dry patches appearing.
⏰
Then, by the sixth day, the peeling was generally completed.
While applying sunscreen and foundation, there were still some old keratin flakes coming off.
When I touched my skin, it felt smoother than before, and I could feel that roughness and dryness had decreased.
I also felt that my makeup application improved.
It might be good to try it once
As a result of my first attempt at self half-peeling at home,
I can't say my skin dramatically transformed into a smooth egg-like complexion after just one try, but I definitely felt changes like reduced roughness and improved texture, which made me happy. I'm glad I tried it!
Continuing to do this regularly seems to yield even better effects, so I want to keep at it!*
Summarized chronologically*
I recommend it to brides-to-be who want to try home peeling before their wedding!
It might be good to do it once when you have time, again before a pre-wedding shoot, and once more before the actual wedding ceremony.♡
