Things to Do Before Meeting His Parents*
Once it's decided that the two of you will get married, you'll go to greet your parents about the marriage.
It is common to visit the woman's family first, and then the man's family. (It's also common to greet them in restaurants or traditional Japanese inns.)
It's also natural to make sure your appearance and grooming are in order before meeting them.
Especially for first meetings, you don't know what the parents are like (you can't judge just from what you hear from him), so it's best to think for yourself and do your best to make a good impression.
So in this article, from a woman's perspective♡
I’ve compiled a preparation list concerning my appearance before I visit his parents.
【1】Re-dye Your Hair
If your hair is too bright or if your roots have grown out and look uneven, it's time to visit the salon for a re-dye.
I didn’t want to go for black, so I opted for a darker chocolate brown with the Illumina color, which is said to give a foreigner-like look (commonly recommended at salons!).
Since I plan to wear my hair in a half-up style, I also asked for a good treatment.♡
【2】Keep Your Nails Simple
I switched from bright red nails or designs with large parts to a more simple art.
I chose a light pink base with just an aurora French design at the tips.♡
(It's simple, but I didn't forget my girly side!♡)
I had previously sharpened the shape of my nails, but I got them rounded for a softer look.
【3】Buy New Clothes
Many people tend to buy new clothes for the family greeting event, right? (When I asked my friends, about half had made new purchases.)
The points to consider when choosing are:
- With sleeves
- Not too revealing at the chest
- Bright colors or floral patterns instead of black or gray
- Skirts longer than knee-length
- Good quality fabric, not cheap-looking
- A look that is not childish and looks appropriately priced to adults
A classic choice would be a dress or a combination of a blouse and a long skirt.
Since you might be meeting his relatives or colleagues after the marriage, having a convenient outfit for formal occasions will be nice to have at this time.

【4】Take Care of Your Shoes
I think you'd wear pumps or heels on the day, but if you are wearing something you've been using for a while, they might be worn out or dirty at the toes.
If possible, do some maintenance yourself with items you have at home; otherwise, you may want to visit a nearby shoe repair shop (there are usually some near train stations).
Also, since you might take off your shoes at home or at a tatami room, make sure to check that the insoles are clean once you take them off.
(They might be visible when you align your shoes...)
If they are dirty, it’s reassuring to keep insoles in.
【5】Check for Runs in Your Stockings
If you are wearing stockings that you already own, make sure to check for any runs, stains, or frays (loose threads).
Doesn’t finding any run in a visible spot bring down your mood a bit...?
You have to worry about it and act as if you’re not concerned!
To avoid this, since stockings aren’t that expensive, I bought a new pair and a spare just in case.
【6】Get Eyelash Perming
I redid my eyelash perm as well.
With eyelash curling, just adding a bit of mascara makes your eyes pop naturally and beautifully, so I highly recommend it. (Using a curler may not last long, so a perm is the best!)
Most brides who have never done it before end up getting an eyelash perm (or extensions) for the wedding.
It might be a good idea to try it for the first time on this occasion.
