"Many Brides Cut Their Hair After the Wedding: A Gentle Reminder About 'Hair Donation' Before the Big Cut*"

Have you heard of "Hair Donation"?
It's often discussed even by major stars both domestically and internationally. Have you heard of "Hair Donation"???
What is "Hair Donation"? *
As the name suggests, Hair Donation means to 'donate (give away) hair'. *
There are people in the world who have lost their hair for some reason, such as illness or accidents.
It's natural for those people to want wigs, but actually, wigs are extremely expensive...
It is common for a wig to cost over 100,000 yen. For more expensive ones, it can range from 300,000 to 400,000 yen.
Especially for small children, as their bodies grow, their head size also changes, so they need to prepare a properly sized wig each time, which can cost tens of thousands of yen each time.
Generally, children who need such wigs are mainly suffering from severe illnesses and, on top of hospital bills and medical expenses, the costs for wigs are a reality that most average families cannot afford.
However, it is nobody's fault that they became ill, and wanting sick children to have bright and happy days is a very correct and straightforward hope for society.
Through Hair Donation, you can gift medical wigs to sick children!
In the past, Japan had no institutions that accepted hair donations, so if someone wanted to provide their hair, they had to send it overseas, making hair donation seem very distant.
However, in 2009, Japan established JHDAC (Japan Hair Donation & Charity), a non-profit organization that receives hair donations and provides medical wigs for free to those under 18, making hair donation much closer and increasing awareness compared to before.
The NPO JHDAC was started by a hairdresser in Osaka when opening their shop with the hope that "while cutting hair for style is important, I also want to make hair cutting more beneficial for society."
They provide a lightweight, sophisticated wig called "Onewig", made from all human hair collected through hair donations, completely free of charge to children under 18 who wish to receive them.

What are the methods and conditions for Hair Donation???
To donate hair,
✅ you can cut it yourself and mail it to JHDAC, or
✅ have it cut at a salon that supports JHDAC, and they will mail it for you.
You can choose either method.
If you cut it yourself, you should follow the specified method to section the hair, bundle it, cut it, and send the bundled hair held with a rubber band to JHDAC's office.
There are about 4,000 hair salons nationwide that support JHDAC, so if you go to one of those salons, they will take care of sending it to JHDAC after cutting your hair.

The condition for hair donation is that the hair must be "at least 31 cm long".
As for the condition of the hair, as long as it is not overly damaged (e.g. breaking when lightly touched), it's okay whether it is dyed, permed, or has gray hair; any condition is fine!
The donated hair will undergo special processing to make the wigs, so the quality of the hair is less important than the "length", and the longer the hair is, the more valuable it is.
It seems there is a significant shortage of hair...
To create a wig, a large quantity of hair is needed.
If you're not familiar with wigs, you might think, "Wait, isn't 31 cm long? Is that really necessary? If one person donates, can't they make a wig? Isn't there that much of a shortage?" In fact, it takes donations from about 20 to 30 people to create one medical wig by Onewig.
This is because, from the hair donated by one person, only about half of it can actually be used.
(It is often the case that the hair is thinned out, leading to uneven lengths.)
Therefore, the number of sick children wanting Onewig always surpasses the available number, and currently, there is an estimated waiting period of around two years from application to receiving a wig.
The hair needed for the free medical wigs is always in short supply, so women with long hair should certainly think of "Hair Donation" if they ever plan to cut their hair.
Simply go to a salon that supports JHDAC, get your hair cut, and send it to JHDAC. That's all there is to it!
Even though cutting hair is the same action, if that hair can be used to help someone instead of being thrown away as trash... wouldn't that be a wonderful thing?
Among brides who have just finished their weddings, many might plan to cut off the long hair they have been growing for the ceremony after the wedding!
When you cut your hair, please remember "Hair Donation"*
If you could pass on a "happy baton" from the happiness of your wedding through your hair, I believe that the children receiving that baton will also find happiness.♡
Hair donation is accepted for hair that is at least 31 cm long. If you have long hair and are considering cutting it... please think about it! *
The acceptance of hair donations was suspended for a while due to the COVID-19 impact, but it seems to have resumed in June 2020.
Whether they are accepting donations may change depending on the infection status, so if you are considering a donation cut, please check their website first.
