I Want to DIY Giant Flowers!

Many brides are likely considering making their own giant flowers for pre-wedding shoots, post-wedding shoots, or the actual wedding day.

Graduate bride @romi0123 provides a detailed explanation on how to make giant flowers, so let's introduce it*

Materials for Giant Flowers*

The materials and tools needed to create giant flowers are as follows. Most of them can be found at Daiso or craft shops♡

☑ Copy paper for printing templates

☑ Colored craft paper for flowers (color and size to your liking)

☑ Green craft paper for the calyx

☑ Floral tape (green vinyl tape is also acceptable)

☑ Gardening stakes (45cm for orchids from Daiso)

☑ Double-sided tape

☑ Glue gun

☑ Scissors

☑ Writing utensils

How to Make Giant Flowers ① Print and Cut Templates

Use the template to print out the petal templates for the giant flower.

➡ Here is the giant flower template*

If you print this template in A4 size, the flower's diameter will be about 30cm.

If printed in A3 size, it will be slightly larger than 40cm.

The size can vary depending on how much you spread the petals, so consider these as rough guidelines♩

Make sure to cut the slits at the base of the petals as well.

How to Make Giant Flowers ② Cut the Craft Paper

Trace the template onto the craft paper. It is recommended to use a pencil or mechanical pencil so that you can erase it later. Don’t forget to trace not only the outer shape but also the slits.

Prepare six petals each in three sizes: S, M, and L.

Once traced, cut along the lines with scissors. It’s fine if it’s not super accurate*

After finishing the cutting, erase the lines you drew with the pencil. If you're not bothered by them, it’s okay to leave them as is, but for a more polished finish, it’s recommended to cleanly erase them◎

How to Make Giant Flowers ③ Add Curvature

Roll the craft paper to add curvature to the petals.

Layer the craft papers by size and roll them from the outside. It’s good to roll them a bit more tightly*

Instead of just rolling straight, also roll diagonally to the left and right to add some character.

After rolling a few times, it will look somewhat like the image below♡ If you want to create a more pronounced curve, try using a pen or something similar while rolling*

How to Make Giant Flowers ④ Attach the Slits

Use double-sided tape to attach the slits at the base of the petals. This will give the petals a more three-dimensional look♡

If you don’t have double-sided tape, you can also use a glue gun or a stapler as substitutes*

How to Make Giant Flowers ⑤ Connect the Petals

For each size, attach six petals together with double-sided tape. Attach them as if to form a circle in the center for best results♡

Once you have three flowers like the one in the upper right photo, layer them from largest to smallest using double-sided tape.

If you feel the petal spread is insufficient, you can adjust it at this time◎

How to Make Giant Flowers ⑥ Create the Center Piece

Next, let’s make the center part of the flower.

Cut the remaining craft paper into long strips about 10cm wide. There are no fixed dimensions, so it’s okay if they are slightly larger or smaller! It doesn’t have to be straight or uniform.

Fold the cut strips so that the width is halved.

From the mountain side of the fold, make deep cuts of about 1cm while leaving some part uncut at the tip. Deeper cuts will make it easier to spread later.

Aim for a gap of about 5 to 7mm between the cuts*

Once you finish cutting, roll it with your hands to create curvature, just like with the petals.

Once the curvature is established, start rolling it up. As it tends to loosen easily, gradually roll while securing it with double-sided tape or a glue gun.

Check the volume as you go◎ It’s recommended to test it out in the flower center as you adjust.

If it’s still not big enough after rolling, prepare additional craft paper strips with slits and roll them on the outside.

Once it reaches your preferred size, fix it in place using double-sided tape or a glue gun to prevent it from loosening. Also, gently fix the backside with a glue gun*

Pressing from the back so that the center of the tube is slightly raised will make it look round and cute♡

If you are not attaching a stem, cover the hole in the center of the petals with craft paper and glue the center piece in place to complete!

If attaching a stem, do not adhere it to the petals yet, and proceed to the next step.

How to Make Giant Flowers ⑧ Assemble the Flower

Now that you have all the necessary parts, it’s time for the assembly process.

Combine three gardening stakes and wrap them with floral tape.

Cut the craft paper into strips about 5cm wide and make fine cuts halfway through. It’s best to make them slightly finer*

Leaving about 2cm uncut at the top, wrap it around the stake and secure it with double-sided tape. The cut parts should be folded outward.

Insert the stake from the top through the center hole of the flower. The cut parts will serve as a stopper, so secure them with a glue gun.

For the bottom part, thread a craft paper with a hole through the stake and attach it to the bottom of the flower.

Fix both the top and bottom using a glue gun until they are stable enough*

How to Make Giant Flowers ⑨ Add the Calyx

Create the ‘calyx’ to attach to the bottom of the flower.

You can use one color of green craft paper, but using three colors creates a beautiful gradient* Cut them with scissors to create leaf shapes.

Attach them to the flower and stem using a glue gun. Attach the necessary amount by considering the overall look. It is said that nine pieces were used this time*

Finally, wrap floral tape around the base to hide where the leaves are attached.

Completion of Giant Flowers ♡

The giant flower is complete! The soft, rounded petals are very cute*

Since the center and calyx are crafted carefully, the result is adorable from both above and below♡

Craft paper can be fragile, so it’s best to not touch it and store it as much as possible before the actual event.
