Do you know Kazusa Okubo Station on the Kominato Railway?
Did you know there's a place in Chiba Prefecture known as the "Totoro Station"?
This location is Kazusa Okubo Station (かずさおおくぼえき), a station on the Kominato Railway (こみなとてつどう) that runs through the Boso Peninsula in Chiba Prefecture.
Once you visit, you'll be sure to leave with a smile, as it feels like a nostalgic station surrounded by nature, straight out of a Studio Ghibli film.
Totoro is in the waiting room!!
The waiting room walls at Kazusa Okubo Station are decorated with characters from the Ghibli movie "My Neighbor Totoro."
The famous scene of waiting for the Catbus in the rain is recreated here.*
Surrounded by greenery, the station stands alone, adorned with plenty of Totoro illustrations. It has an otherworldly charm that is incredibly cute, making it a well-known spot for tourism and photography.
It is referred to as the "Totoro Station"♡
Taking a seat on the bench for a trio photo with Totoro and Satsuki is popular.
These illustrations were created by local elementary school students. Alongside Totoro and Satsuki, there are also illustrations of the soot sprites (まっくろくろすけ)♡
The retro-style station building gives off a curious time flow as if you've wandered into the world of Ghibli.
The trolley train on the Kominato Railway is cute too♡
The train that arrives at Kazusa Okubo Station is a retro, darling trolley train in cream and vermilion colors. The sight of the trolley train emerging from the lush green trees along with the sound of the level crossing resembles a scene from a Ghibli movie.
The inside of the train also has a retro vibe. It brings back nostalgic feelings, making you feel like a child again.
The beauty of nature changes with the seasons♡
Kazusa Okubo Station is surrounded by abundant nature.
In spring, you can enjoy cherry blossoms and rapeseed flowers; in summer, hydrangeas; and in autumn, cosmos flowers.
The sight of the trolley train running through the fields of blooming rapeseed is breathtaking! It looks like a yellow carpet.
There are benches and swings around the station, perfect for a self-photoshoot. You could capture some amazing forest photos here♡
Kazusa Okubo Station has toilets and vending machines, allowing you to relax and take your time.
If you have a bento box, it might be nice to share it on a bench with your partner.
The Kominato Railway has limited train service, so it takes about an hour for the next train to arrive after you get off, giving you a chance to enjoy a leisurely time together♡
How do you get there? What are the fares?
The Kominato Railway connects Goido Station in Ichihara City, Chiba Prefecture, to Kazusa Nakano Station in Otaki Town, Isumi District.
You can reach Goido Station from Tokyo Station in about an hour using the JR Sobu Rapid Line. It takes around an hour from Goido Station to your destination, Kazusa Okubo Station. Enjoy the long train journey with your partner♡
The fare from Goido Station to Kazusa Okubo Station is 1,190 yen one way. The one-day free pass for the Kominato Railway (1,800 yen) is a good deal♩
